Pre-Treatment Requirements for Electrolysis
Discontinue harsh skincare products: Do not use tretinoin (Retin A), tazarotene (Tazorac), or any retinoid for at least 1 week prior to your electrolysis treatment. Discontinue isotretinoin (Accutane, Claravis, Absorica, Amnesteem, Myorisan, Zenatane) for a minimum of 6 months prior to Electrolysis.
Discontinue epilating and depilatories: While actively in the processes of permanent hair removal through electrolysis do not use depilatory creams, along with waxing and tweezing. These remove the hair from the follicle, making it impossible for the electrologist to treat the root. This will also interfere with your hair growth cycle. To remove unwanted hair between appointments, shave with a razor. Foil razors are the most gentle on the skin.
Stop shaving 3 days before your appointment: Make sure you have 3-4 days of hair growth. Hair needs to be between 1/8 and 1/4 inch (2-6 mm) long, which allows your electrologist to pick it up with tweezers. If the hair is too short, we may not be able to treat the area. If it’s too long, it can hinder the treatment process by slowing down your electrologist.
Discontinue Spironolactone 3 days before your appointment: * Only stop Spironolactone if it is part of your HRT. Spironolactone can cause dehydration because it is a diuretic, also known as a “water pill.” It increases the excretion of excess fluid and salt from the body, which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration effects electrolysis since electrolysis relies on the moisture in the hair follicles.
Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate the skin 2-3 days before your appointment. This will help remove dead skin cells and ingrown hairs. No exfoliating the skin on the day of your appointment.
Hydrate. Electrolysis is most effective when you are hydrated. Drink plenty of water and electrolytes starting 2-3 days prior to your treatment. Use water enhancers such as hydration packets or electrolyte drinks to retain hydration more effectively. Also consider eating foods with a high moisture content such as fruit or vegetables. Dehydrated follicles are harder to treat. Hydration will also help your skin heal more quickly.
Sunscreen: Wear sunscreen and/or avoid the sun 48 hours prior to your appointment. Electrolysis cannot be performed on sunburnt skin. EltaMD and Byoma are good brand options for facial sunscreen.
Refrain from caffeine and alcohol: No caffeine or alcohol 24 hours before your appointment. These substances have a dehydrating effect on the skin and can increase your sensitivity to pain.
