Dyeing Light Hairs Before Electrolysis

If you have blonde or light-colored hair, or are receiving permanent hair removal in preparation for surgery, we recommend dyeing the hair in the treatment area prior to your appointment. This helps the electrologist see each hair more clearly, ensuring a more precise and effective treatment. Your electrologist will let you know at consultation/after appointments if this is an important step for you.

How to Dye the Hair

  1. When to Dye:
Dye the hair the night before or the morning of your appointment.
    * Do not wash the area prior to applying dye. Natural skin oils help prevent the dye from staining the skin itself.
  2. Mix the Dye:
Follow the instructions included in the box to prepare the product. You only need a small amount for facial or body hair.
  3. Apply to Treatment Area:
Use the provided brush or a wooden tongue depressor to carefully apply the dye only to the hairs being treated.
    * Always perform a patch test 48 hours before full application to ensure you don’t have a reaction to the dye. Transition Health is not liable for any adverse reactions that may occur.
  4. Processing Time:
Let the dye sit for 8–10 minutes, sometimes longer if hairs are stubborn.
  5. Clean the Skin:
    • Gently wipe off excess dye using dry paper towels. It is important to get as much dye off as possible before wiping with any water as the water will “set” the dye to the skin and the goal is to have just your hair dyed.
    • Apply a small amount of Dawn dish soap and gently rub to remove any remaining dye from the skin.
    • Wipe the area again with dry paper towels.
    • Rinse or wipe with water until all soap is removed.
  6. If using Numbing Cream:
If dyeing right before your appointment, after dye removal and cleaning, apply numbing cream as usual and cover with plastic wrap.
